English and Media Literacy

My name is Mrs. Jennifer (Schrot) Graham. I attended Winona State University the fall after I graduated high school in 2002. Initially, I went for and completed 2 years of, 7-12 ELA Instruction. After coaching cheerleading and track & field for a year, I decided I really liked working with Middle School-aged students. I decided I would change my major to Elementary Education and Middle-Level Communication Arts and Literature. So far I have taught English as a second language, gifted and talented, kindergarten, first grade, and fifth grade (some long term subbing and some short call subbing) before I found a home with Morristown Junior High.

I recently finished my graduate schooling at Concordia University of St. Paul. I have thus far received my reading specialist endorsement and masters in reading instruction. I am excited to be using this endorsement this year as I will also be doing some push-in reading intervention to help my students decode and connect with texts across disciplines. I will also be using my specialist degree to teach a newer media class in 6th grade - Media Literacy. This class helps students with digital platforms, navigating, decoding, and interpreting bias, ambiguity, and persuasive ploys.

I'm from a down-home country family with extended family being immediate family. My cousins continue to carry on the Schrot tradition of farming. We are very close-knit and I think that is why I get along so well with the families in the area.

I actually have heritage in the Morristown/Kilkenny area. My Grandmother is from there - the Poehler and Gudridge families. Grandma actually attended Morristown Public School until World War II forced our family to move to Faribault.

I have actually gotten the privilege of teaching one of my cousins a few years back.
